I had known the late Syed Husin Ali for more than 50 years. We had worked together in the seventies and eighties in defending university autonomy and academic freedom. Though our friendship had its ups and downs, Syed was one of the few Malaysian academics I respected for his commitment to social justice, economic equality and political freedom. He championed the dignity of the masses through both his scholarship and his activism. He never sought position or power and remained humble and honest till the end of his life.
May ALLAH reward his good deeds and grant him a place among the righteous in the hereafter.
