Ms Bhupalan : A Life dedicated to Justice.
Ms Bhupalan, 98, who passed away on the 13th of May 2025 was a staunch champion of justice all her life.
She joined JUST on the 1st of June 2001 and participated in some of our activities. She was well-known by then as an educator and a dedicated advocate of equality for women.Older Malaysians will remember her as a leader who was in the forefront of the
successful campaign to grant women teachers equal pay for equal work. She took up many other issues in education.
I had known her for decades. Both of us were members of the Malaysian Consultative Council on the Economy ( MAPEN) in 1989 which formulated the outline of the National Development Plan that replaced the New Economic Policy (NEP). Ms Bhupalan’s views on the economy , like her stand on most other aspects of nation-building, were balanced, incisive and people oriented.
JUST hopes that Malaysians will always cherish her contributions — contributions which should inspire future generations to strive for a better Malaysia and a just world.
