Prof. Fred Dallmayr (1928-2024) was an esteemed political theorist and philosopher whose career spanned several decades, leaving a profound impact on global political thought and interfaith dialogue. A professor emeritus at the University of Notre Dame, Prof. Dallmayr focused much of his scholarly work on comparative
political theory, cross-cultural philosophy, and the intersection of ethics and politics. His work emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue between different philosophical traditions, particularly in a globalized world where such exchanges are
increasingly crucial. His prolific output included numerous books, essays, and edited volumes that advanced these ideas, positioning him as one of the leading voices in contemporary political philosophy.
Prof. Dallmayr’s contributions went beyond academia. He was closely affiliated with the International Movement for a Just World (JUST), an organization dedicated to promoting global justice through intellectual and spiritual dialogue. He was a member
of JUST’s International Advisory Panel (IAP). This role was consistent with his broader philosophical commitment to creating a world where diverse perspectives could coexist harmoniously while addressing systemic inequalities.
Throughout his career, Prof. Dallmayr’s work was marked by a deep commitment to bridging divides—be they cultural, philosophical, or political. Even in his later years, Prof. Dallmayr continued to engage with these critical issues, contributing to global discourse on peace, justice, and the ethical dimensions of political life.
Prof. Fred Dallmayr’s passing on June 5, 2024, at the age of 95 marked the end of an era for global political philosophy, but his ideas and legacy continue to resonate. His contributions remain vital resources for anyone committed to building a more just and compassionate world.
