Dear President Joseph R. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Dr. Jill Biden,

We are 45 American physicians, surgeons, and nurses who have volunteered in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.

We worked with various nongovernmental organizations and the World Health Organization in hospitals throughout the Strip. In addition to our medical and surgical expertise, many of us have a public health background, as well as experience working in humanitarian and conflict zones, including Ukraine during the brutal Russian invasion. Some of us are veterans of the United States Armed Forces. We are a multifaith and multiethnic group. None of us support the horrors committed on October 7 by Palestinian armed groups and individuals in Israel.

The Constitution of the World Health Organization states:

“The health of all peoples is fundamental to the attainment of peace and security and is dependent on the fullest cooperation of individuals and States.”

It is in this spirit that we write to you.

We are among the only neutral observers who have been permitted to enter the Gaza Strip since October 7. Given our broad expertise and direct experience of working throughout Gaza we are uniquely positioned to comment on several matters of importance to our government as it decides whether to continue supporting Israel’s attack on, and siege of, the Gaza Strip. Specifically, we believe we are well positioned to comment on the massive human toll from Israel’s attack on Gaza, especially the toll it has taken on women and children.

This letter collects and summarizes our own experiences and direct observations in Gaza. We have also provided links to a much longer and heavily cited appendix summarizing the publicly available information from media, humanitarian, and academic sources on key aspects of Israel’s invasion of Gaza. This letter and the appendix show probative evidence that the human toll in Gaza is far higher than is understood in the United States. It is likely that the death toll from this conflict is already greater than 92,000, an astonishing 4.2% of Gaza’s population. Our government must act immediately to prevent an even worse catastrophe than what has already befallen the people of Gaza and Israel. A ceasefire must be imposed on both Israel and Palestinian armed groups by withholding military support for Israel and supporting an international arms embargo on both Israel and all Palestinian armed groups. We believe our government is obligated to do this, both under American law and International Humanitarian Law, and that it is the right thing to do.

With only marginal exceptions, everyone in Gaza is sick, injured, or both. This includes every national aid worker, every international volunteer, and probably every Israeli hostage: every man, woman, and child. While working in Gaza we saw widespread malnutrition in our patients and our Palestinian healthcare colleagues. Every one of us lost weight rapidly in Gaza despite having privileged access to food and having taken our own supplementary nutrient-dense food with us. We have photographic evidence of life-threatening malnutrition in our patients, especially children, that we are eager to share with you.

Virtually every child under the age of five whom we encountered, both inside and outside of the hospital, had both a cough and watery diarrhea. We found cases of jaundice (indicating hepatitis A infection under such conditions) in virtually every room of the hospitals in which we served, and in many of our healthcare colleagues in Gaza. An astonishingly high percentage of our surgical incisions became infected from the combination of malnutrition, impossible operating conditions, and lack of supplies and medications, including antibiotics. The pregnant women we treated often gave birth to underweight infants, and they were unable to breastfeed due to malnutrition. This left their newborns at high risk of death given the lack of access to potable water anywhere in Gaza. Many of those infants died. In Gaza we watched malnourished new mothers feed their underweight newborns infant formula made with poisonous water. We can never forget that the world abandoned these innocent women and babies.

We urge you to realize that epidemics are raging in Gaza. Israel’s continued, repeated displacement of the malnourished and sick population of Gaza, half of whom are children, to areas with no running water or even toilets available is absolutely shocking. It is virtually guaranteed to result in widespread death from viral and bacterial diarrheal diseases and pneumonias, particularly in children under the age of five. We worry that unknown thousands have already died from the lethal combination of malnutrition and disease, and that tens of thousands more will die in the coming months. Most of them will be young children.

Children are universally considered innocents in armed conflict. However, every single signatory to this letter treated children in Gaza who suffered violence that must have been deliberately directed at them. Specifically, every one of us on a daily basis treated pre-teen children who were shot in the head and chest.

President and Dr. Biden, we wish you could see the nightmares that plague so many of us since we have returned: dreams of children maimed and mutilated by our weapons, and their inconsolable mothers begging us to save them. We wish you could hear the cries and screams our consciences will not let us forget. We cannot believe that anyone would continue arming the country that is deliberately killing these children after seeing what we have seen.

The pregnant women we treated were particularly malnourished. Those of us who worked with pregnant women regularly saw stillbirths and maternal deaths that were easily preventable in any third-world healthcare system. The rate of infection in C-section incisions was astonishing. Women underwent C-sections without anesthesia, and were given nothing but Tylenol afterwards because no other pain medications were available.

All of us observed emergency departments overwhelmed by patients seeking treatment for chronic medical conditions such as renal failure, hypertension, and diabetes. Aside from trauma patients, most ICU beds were taken up by type 1 diabetics who no longer had access to injected insulin, due to the lack of medication and the widespread loss of electricity and refrigeration. Israel has destroyed more than half of Gaza’s healthcare resources and has killed one out of every 40 healthcare workers in Gaza. At the same time healthcare needs have increased massively from the lethal combination of military violence, malnutrition, and disease.

The hospitals where we worked were starved of basic supplies from, surgical material to soap. They were regularly cut off from electricity and Internet access, denied clean water, and operated at four to seven times their bed capacity. Every hospital was overwhelmed beyond the breaking point by displaced persons seeking safety, by the constant stream of patients whose treatment of chronic conditions had been interrupted by the war, by the huge influx of seriously wounded patients who typically arrived in mass casualty events, and by the sick and malnourished seeking medical care.

These observations and the publicly available material detailed in the appendix lead us to believe that the death toll from this conflict is many times higher than what is reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health. We also believe this is probative evidence of widespread violations of American laws governing the use of American weapons abroad, and of International Humanitarian Law. We cannot forget the scenes of unbearable cruelty directed at women and children that we witnessed ourselves.

As we met our healthcare colleagues in Gaza it was clear that they were malnourished, and both physically and mentally devastated. We quickly learned that our Palestinian healthcare colleagues were among the most traumatized people in Gaza, and perhaps in the entire world. Like virtually all people in Gaza they had lost family members and their homes. Most lived in and around their hospitals with their surviving families in unimaginable conditions. Although they continued working a grueling schedule, they had not been paid since October 7. All were acutely aware that their work as healthcare providers had marked them as targets for Israel. This makes a mockery of the protected status hospitals and healthcare providers are granted under the oldest and most widely accepted provisions of International Humanitarian Law.

We met healthcare personnel in Gaza who worked at hospitals that had been raided and destroyed by Israel. Many of these colleagues of ours were taken by Israel during the attacks. They all told us a slightly different version of the same story: in captivity they were barely fed, continuously physically and psychologically abused, and finally dumped naked on the side of a road. Many told us they were subjected to mock executions and other forms of mistreatment and torture. Far too many of our healthcare colleagues told us they were simply waiting to die.

We urge you to see that Israel has directly targeted and deliberately devastated Gaza’s entire healthcare system, and that Israel has targeted our colleagues in Gaza for death, disappearance, and torture. These unconscionable acts are entirely at odds with American law, American values, and International Humanitarian Law.

Dr. Biden, you worked with young people throughout your life. We hope and pray that you will not look away from the unspeakable horrors the youth of Gaza face today, horrors only we as Americans can end. We sincerely hope you will do everything in your power to stop what is being done to them.

President Biden and Vice President Harris, any solution to this problem must begin with an immediate and permanent ceasefire.We urge you to withhold military, economic, and diplomatic support from the State of Israel and to participate in an international arms embargo of both Israel and all Palestinian armed groups until a permanent ceasefire is established, and until good faith negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict.

In the meantime:

1. All land crossings between Gaza and Israel as well as the Rafah Crossing must be opened to unfettered aid delivery by recognized international humanitarian organizations. Security screening of aid deliveries must be conducted by an independent international inspection regime instead of Israeli forces. These screenings must be based on a clear, unambiguous, and published list of forbidden items, and with a clear independent international mechanism for challenging forbidden items, as verified by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the occupied Palestinian territory.
2. A bare minimum water allocation of 20L of potable water per person per day must be allocated to the population of Gaza, as verified by UN Water.
3. Full and unrestricted access of medical and surgical professionals and medical and surgical equipment to the Gaza Strip must be allowed. This must include items taken in healthcare professionals’ personal luggage to safeguard their proper storage, sterility, and timely delivery, as verified by the World Health Organization. Incredibly, Israel is currently blocking any physician of Palestinian descent from working in Gaza, even American citizens. This makes a mockery of the American ideal that “all men are created equal” and degrades our nation and our profession. Our work is lifesaving. Our Palestinian healthcare colleagues in Gaza are desperate for relief and protection, and they deserve both.

We are not politicians. We do not claim to have all the answers. We are simply physicians and nurses who cannot remain silent about what we saw in Gaza. Every day that we continue supplying weapons and munitions to Israel is another day that women are shredded by our bombs and children are murdered with our bullets.

President Biden and Vice President Harris, we urge you: end this madness now!

Amid the Israeli regime’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, high-stakes negotiations aimed at formalizing and upgrading the long-standing, covert relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia persist. While attempting to draw the parameters of a ceasefire agreement, the Biden administration has likewise doubled down on efforts to broker a historic deal between the two countries.

This policy memo examines the mutually reinforcing interests of the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel that fuel the prospective agreement. It interrogates Saudi’s feigned solidarity with the Palestinian struggle and situates the normalization deal within shifting regional dynamics.

US and Israeli Interests: A Shifting Security Alliance

Washington has long aspired for Saudi Arabia to embrace Israel officially. The bipartisan Israel Relations Normalization Act, passed by Congress in March 2022, underscored this objective, mandating the State Department to further Arab normalization with Israel based on the Trump-era Abraham Accords.

The message to Saudi Arabia is clear: an Israeli alliance is a prerequisite for US protection

Among all possible partnerships, Saudi Arabia holds particular weight for both US and Israeli interests. The US is endeavoring to cement Israel as the preeminent military-economic linchpin of a US-led regional order. Within that order, Israel will serve as the hub for an anti-Iran coalition involving Saudi Arabia and other Abraham Accords partners. Thus, understanding Saudi-Israeli rapprochement as a calculated initiative to cultivate new security alliances amid increasing global power rivalries is critical.

A US-Saudi defense pact, which lies at the heart of ongoing normalization talks with Israel, speaks directly to this aim. The pact would commit the US to defend Saudi Arabia and expand Saudi’s access to US weapons. In doing so, the arrangement would strengthen US-Saudi military relations and simultaneously help to thwart Riyadh’s security cooperation with China. Regional interests notwithstanding, the US has conditioned any such agreement with Saudi Arabia on the latter’s normalization with Israel. Hence, the message to Saudi Arabia is clear: an Israeli alliance is a prerequisite for US protection.

Masking Saudi’s Abandonment of Palestine

The Saudi regime is ostensibly making a number of Palestine-related demands as part of the normalization negotiations. Riyadh’s stipulations reportedly include a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and a “pathway” to Palestinian statehood. The timeline for statehood is not clear, however, and the Israeli regime would certainly place conditions on the agreement that would allow indefinite postponement of such a move.

Saudi Arabia’s attempt to tie Israeli normalization with Palestinian statehood is undoubtedly designed to provide political cover from those who may argue that the kingdom has abandoned the Palestinian cause. In reality, normalization with Israel would be a continuation—not the start—of Saudi’s desertion of the Palestinian struggle and its de facto acceptance of the Israeli settler-colonial status quo.

Indeed, the fruits of Saudi’s decades-long informal relationship with the Israeli regime can currently be seen through its crackdown on domestic solidarity with Palestine and amplification of anti-Palestinian propaganda in its media coverage of the genocide. The new Saudi school curriculum has even gone so far as to scrub the name “Palestine” from maps in school textbooks.

Despite this systematic effort to reshape public understanding of Israeli settler colonialism, the Saudi regime faces an uphill battle in trying to sway its population. A recent survey by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies found that 95% of the Saudi public consider the Palestinian cause as a central Arab issue. A 2023 poll by the pro-Israel Washington Institute for Near East Policy likewise indicated that 96% of Saudi citizens are opposed to normalization and believe Arab countries should cut all ties with Israel.

Joining the Abraham Accords

If a Saudi-Israeli normalization deal goes ahead, it will likely be incorporated into the expansive Abraham Accords framework. Saudi Arabia’s formal entry into this scheme carries far-reaching and dangerous ramifications for Palestine and the broader region. Indeed, the kingdom’s immense financial clout and symbolic weight in the Arab and Muslim worlds could catalyze a domino effect. Through economic incentives or political pressure, Saudi participation may compel other Arab and Muslim nations to join this growing alliance.

Even if a formal Saudi-Israeli normalization deal remains pending until after the next US president assumes office in 2025, Saudi Arabia’s determined push to legitimize a widely-condemned regime stands as a pursuit utterly divorced from global realities. And while much of the world has awoken to Israel’s genocidal and colonial aims, Riyadh’s dogged willingness to proceed with such normalization obliterates any pretense of rational and strategic calculations, let alone solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

The Israeli daily Haaretz reported Monday that over the weekend, in violation of humanitarian law, a unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the 401st Brigade of the Armored Corps, rigged a critical water reservoir in Gaza with explosives and then detonated them, destroying the facility known as the Canada Well.

The water facility, located in Tel Sultan neighborhood on the northwestern side of Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip, was built in 1999 with funding provided by the Canadian International Development Agency. Equipped with solar panels, it enabled water services to continue for tens of thousands of people in the area despite the destruction of the entire electrical grid in the enclave.

Following the destruction, the IDF soldiers celebrated by posting videos of the operation on their Instagram and X social media accounts, writing, “Destruction of the Tel Sultan water reservoir in honor of Shabbat.” The Israeli army admitted that its soldiers were responsible for the bombing of the Canada Well and said it was investigating if any international laws were violated.

Monther Shoblaq, director general of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, speaking with Drop Site, said, “I was shocked when I saw the video. It’s not just that they targeted this water facility; it’s the fact that they planted explosives, celebrated the act on Instagram, and did so under the guise of honoring the Sabbath. It’s deeply cruel. This is the Canada Well in Tal al-Sultan—one of the most important water facilities in the city of Rafah.”

What is being disputed in the Israeli press, however, is whether the brigade commander of the Combat Engineers obtained permission from senior officers of the IDF Southern Command to destroy the facility and not the obvious fact that the operation was typical of the conduct of the IDF throughout the war against the people of Gaza. The areas where the operation took place were considered humanitarian safe zones, which become killing zones whenever the IDF pleases. As is usual in these situations, the army told Haaretz it was going to look into the incident and consider if the military police needed to open an investigation.

Given the international outcry over Israeli war crimes in Gaza, these reports from Rafah are one more embarrassment for the IDF and the Netanyahu government, which will try to manufacture yet another outrageous pretext, perhaps claiming that the operation was necessary to prevent Hamas from accessing potable water for their continued operations. A similar argument could be made for actions to deprive the population of breathable air as well.

Throughout the now more than nine-month-long siege on the Gaza Strip, countless video clips posted on social media have exposed the barbarism of IDF in the killing and abuse of innocent Palestinians, as well as international aid workers who have risked their lives to help the beleaguered population. In each case, neither the Israeli army, Netanyahu, nor the US government has raised a finger to curb the savagery. On the contrary, they have commended and justified these actions.

On the same day as the Haaretz report, UN Human Rights Office’s spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence, speaking with Anadolu Agency,said, “It is indeed strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law to attack civilian objects. Moreover, it is prohibited to attack objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, such as drinking water supplies.”

Furthermore, Laurence noted, “The Human Rights Office has received no information on any investigations by Israel into the specific incident of the destruction of the water reserve. In view of Israel’s well-documented failure to ensure accountability for serious violations of international humanitarian law and the international human rights law, remedies at the international level are essential to addressing this long-standing accountability gap.”

The complete destruction of the water supplies in Gaza is part and parcel of the assault on the basic essentials of life for Palestinians from the very inception of the genocidal campaign.

In an interview with Major General (Reserves) Giora Eiland, the adviser to Yoav Gallant, on the IDF’s radio station, GLZ, in October 2023, Eiland said, “But there are many wells in Gaza, which contain water which they treat locally, since originally they contain salt. If the energy shortage in Gaza makes it so that they stop pumping out water, that’s good. Otherwise, we have to attack these water treatment plants in order to create a situation of thirst and hunger in Gaza, and I would say, forewarn of an unprecedented economical and humanitarian crisis.”

The same month, Eiland wrote in the Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, “The State of Israel has no choice but to turn Gaza into a place that is temporarily or permanently impossible to live in. Creating a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a necessary means to achieve the goal. Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist.”

Placing context on the blowing up of the Canada Well water reservoir, Reuters reported yesterday that in July the Israeli army destroyed 30 water wells in Rafah and Khan Younis. And given the incessant bombing and drone attacks, the daily chore to seek water and sustenance has potentially lethal consequences. In May, the BBC reported that satellite data had revealed more than half of Gaza’s water sites had been damaged including four of the six wastewater treatment plants crucial to preventing the build-up of sewage.

As the Reutersreport noted, “People have dug wells in bleak areas near the sea where the bombing has pushed them or rely on salty tap water from Gaza’s only aquifer, now contaminated with seawater and sewage. Children walk long distances to line up at makeshift collection points. Often not strong enough to carry the filled containers, they drag them on wooden boards. Gaza city has lost nearly all its water production capacity, with 88 percent of its water wells and 100 percent of its desalination plants damaged or destroyed.”

Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty International’s Senior Director of Research, Advocacy, Policy and Campaigns, today said that the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on the ‘unlawful’ Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is a historic victory for the rights of Palestinians.

She clarified in a statement that “the occupation is a fundamental pillar of the apartheid system that Israel relies on to dominate and persecute the Palestinians, as they are exposed to the demolition of their homes and the seizure of their lands in favor of colonist expansion.”

Rosas affirmed, “The ICJ’s advisory opinion comes while Israel has continued to blatantly and catastrophically violate international humanitarian law during the past nine months, launching deadly and unlawful attacks on the occupied Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of an unprecedented number of civilians.

She stressed that the international community, especially Israel’s allies, must now take tough action to ensure that Israel ends its illegal occupation, starting with an immediate halt to the expansion of Israeli colonies, reversing the annexation of Palestinian lands, including East Jerusalem, and dismantling the brutal apartheid system against Palestinians.

“Ending the occupation is crucial in order to stop the recurring pattern of human rights violations throughout Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories,” she added.

Rosas  affirmed that Israel must withdraw its forces from all parts of the occupied territories, including the Gaza Strip, evacuate all colonists from the West Bank, including illegally annexed East Jerusalem, and relinquish control over all aspects of Palestinian life.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that violence is widely used against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.

The newspaper reported in an article that One Palestinian inmate died with a ruptured spleen and broken ribs after being beaten by Israeli prison guards. Another met an excruciating end because a chronic condition went untreated and a third screamed for help for hours before dying.

The Washington Post said that the three men are among at least 13 Palestinians from the West Bank and Israel to die in Israeli jails since October 7, 2023.

“Violence is pervasive,” said Jessica Montell, executive director of the Israeli rights group HaMoked, which has worked for years with Palestinian inmates. “It’s very overcrowded. Every prisoner that we’ve met with has lost 30 pounds.”

A 28-year-old former prisoner said guards beat them “like crazy people,” kicking and beating them with batons.

Ibrahim, the brother of Abdul Rahman al-Maari, 33, who died in Megiddo Prison in November, said his brother was detained at a temporary checkpoint in February 2023.

Ibrahim said he lost contact with his brother after October 7, 2023.

An autopsy report examined by Dr. Danny Rosen of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel stated that al-Maari’s ribs were broken, and that there were deformities in his back, hip, left arm, head and neck.

Khairy Hamad, 32, who was held in the same section, said al-Maari was thrown down the stairs while handcuffed and bleeding from his head, on the grounds that he had spoken back to guards during a cell search.

He said al-Maari was left for hours in pain and crying for help until he died.

The scenes of far-right Israelis breaking into a detention facility to protest the arrest of soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian reveal a society heading towards a breakdown of state institutions, analysts have told Middle East Eye.

On Monday, nine soldiers in the notorious Sde Teiman facility were detained in southern Israel’s Negev desert for questioning.

They were accused of sexual abuse against a Palestinian detainee, which led to him being hospitalised with serious injuries to his rectum area. The soldiers deny the charges.

The arrests were met by angry demonstrations at the gates of Sde Teiman, with several protesters temporarily breaching the gates before being dispersed by police.

Among the protesters were reservist soldiers, as well as two far-right parliamentarians: Zvi Sukkot, a member of the Religious Zionist movement, and Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, of the Jewish Power party.

“This is a very significant event,” Israeli journalist and analyst Meron Rapoport told MEE. “An event that has the character of a rebellion… to completely dismantle what is left of the rules that are supposed to govern society.”

Israeli soldiers reportedly barricaded themselves into Sde Teiman and used pepper spray to defend themselves against arrest by the military police, before eventually being taken into custody.

May Pundak, a lawyer, activist and chair of Israeli-Palestinian peace organisation A Land for All, told MEE that the scenes following the arrests were evidence that forces within Israel were attempting to “dismantle democracy”.

She noted that members of the Israeli government – which sought the arrests in the first place – joined the protests in an attempt to make “the government and the leaders of the army an enemy of the state”.

Effectively, that made these far-right leaders a threat to the government “from within”, she noted.

“There is no law and order, no enforcement,” she said. “This is the disintegration of the state.”

Widespread abuse

The alleged rape in Sde Teiman is the latest such allegation of abuse from the notorious facility.

Established after the 7 October Hamas-led attack on Israel and subsequent war on Gaza, Sde Teiman is an ostensibly temporary centre to hold Palestinian detainees. More than 4,000 Palestinians from Gaza have been detained by the Israeli military, often held with no charge or evidence of wrongdoing.

In April, an unnamed doctor described in harrowing detail the conditions at the facility, including limb amputation due to handcuff injuries and prisoners forced to defecate in nappies.

Further investigations by Middle East Eye, CNN and the New York Times found widespread examples of abuse at the centre.

According to the UN, at least 27 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody since the war, including at Sde Teiman. Officers at the facility told the New York Times that 35 Palestinians detained there since October had died either at the facility or after being brought to nearby hospitals.

Tal Steiner, executive director of the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, told MEE that an “unprecedented increase in torture” has been used by Israel against Palestinians since 7 October.

“We have documented multiple instances of abuse, of physical torture, of humiliation,” she said.

Steiner added she was hopeful that a “silver lining” from Monday’s events could be that allegations of abuse that had been reported for months may finally receive public attention and “some accountability”.

Throughout the war, Israeli soldiers have brazenly published images of themselves abusing and humiliating Palestinian detainees, without any consequences or retributions from the authorities.

Indeed, such actions appear encouraged by government officials. On Sunday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who leads the party that Eliyahu belongs to, boasted that conditions inside Israeli prisons “have indeed worsened” since the war on Gaza began. “I am proud of that,” he said.

The latest abuse allegations from Sde Teiman are part of a well-worn pattern, Pundak noted, saying they were the latest example of Israeli authorities “breaking every red line from a moral point of view, from an international law point of view and from an inhumane point of view”.

Indeed, such abuses and impunity are not new, as can be seen with the case of Elor Azaria. In 2016, the Israeli soldier shot and killed a pacified Palestinian suspect, only to be lionised by the Israeli right wing. He served just nine months of an 18-month sentence and became a poster boy for rightwingers.

‘The army itself became the enemy’

The Israeli military has operated with impunity since the war broke out, yet its conduct has nonetheless drawn international pressure.

Israel is subject to cases at the two major Hague-based courts: the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

At the ICC, the chief prosecutor is applying for arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defence minister, Yoav Gallant, over crimes committed in Gaza. The ICJ, meanwhile, is trying Israel over accusations of genocide in the Palestinian enclave.

Rapoport sees the arrests at Sde Teiman as an attempt by Israel to show the international courts that it was acting domestically to deal with instances of abuse against Palestinians.

Under the principle of complementarity, the ICC acts as a court of last resort when member states are unwilling or unable to try heinous crimes themselves.

“This whole investigation… is because of the international pressure and the Hague, otherwise it would not have been opened,” he said.

Netanyahu “strongly condemned” the attempted break-in at the facility, though he did not comment on the allegations themselves, unlike other members of his Likud party and government coalition, many of whom defended the soldiers.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, for instance, posted a video in which he said the arrested soldiers should be treated like heroes, not criminals.

Rapoport said that for many on the Israeli right wing, “the army itself became the enemy” as soon as it began investigating harm against Palestinians.

He compared the sentiments to those shared by rightwing Israelis in the lead-up to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister who was killed in 1995 by an ultranationalist for engaging in peace talks with Palestinians.

This time, he warned, “it seems to be deeper and more dangerous”.

“Rabin was one person. Here they rebel against the authority of the army. As soon as it does not have the army, it is doubtful whether it will be possible to call the country a functioning country,” Rapoport said.

Notably, none of the protesters who forced their way into Sde Teiman were arrested. Another protest broke out at a military courthouse later that day in Beit Lid, where demonstrators again were met with little resistance.

“This is a country that fails to maintain law and order, it is a country that is close to being a failed state,” said Rapoport.

He added that the scenes on Tuesday reveal a schism between military generals in Tel Aviv and soldiers on the ground in Gaza.

“Suppose there is a ceasefire tomorrow and the army orders the units to leave the Gaza Strip. Will these units listen to the army?” he asked. “A serious question arises here.”

Israel is on a rampage. Three leaders were eliminated in quick succession. Fuad Shukr (Hezbollah) killed in Beirut, Ismael Haniyeh (Hamas) killed in Beirut, and Amir Ali Hajizadeh (IRGC Air force). You cannot talk peace in one room and plan assassinations in another. What is infuriating is the stern silence from the so-called civilized western world. As much as Israel is implementing apartheid through its war machine and politics, so are its western allies including the EU who are fast asleep and will take days before issuing a statement that says neither this or that! In an Amnesty International statement, Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty International’s Senior Director of Research, Advocacy, Policy and Campaigns, said that “the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on the ‘unlawful’ Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is a historic victory for the rights of Palestinians”.

A Hamas spokesperson had this to say: “The Palestinian resistance will not be shaken by the martyrdom of one of its leaders. Hamas is an ideology that will continue and grow among the Palestinian masses despite the great sacrifices the Palestinians of Gaza are making”. It’s clear to see that too many western leaders do not understand this basic fact. Yet, streets in the West nations are only multiplying their protests. The rulers are far removed from reality because they obviously stand to gain from pursuing racist policies and practices.

Within the paradigm of a colonial construct, the tactic of divide-and-rule is a key tactic. Israel (coupled with US push) is resolutely hurrying the formalization of and advancement of the long-standing, concealed relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Ignoring Israel’s unending genocide in Gaza, high-stakes negotiations are being followed through aimed to cement the mutually reinforcing interests of the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.  It is clear that Saudi Arabia’s solidarity with the Palestinian struggle is plastic. It wants centre-stage in the regional dynamics and situates the normalization deal within shifting regional dynamics.

As Israeli jails crowd up with more detainees than the facilities can cope with, prisoner’s conditions have dangerously deteriorated and the treatment of prisoners is brutal, and devoid of any checks and balances. Israeli soldiers are known to brazenly ‘sodomize’ prisoners – a barbaric act in itself. A report from ‘Middle East Eye’ reports “scenes of far-right Israelis breaking into a detention facility to protest the arrest of soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian reveal a society heading towards a breakdown of state institutions, analysts have told Middle East Eye. Nine soldiers in the notorious Sde Teiman facility were detained in southern Israel’s Negev desert for questioning.  They were accused of sexual abuse against a Palestinian detainee, which led to him being hospitalized with serious injuries to his rectum area”.

These are trying times for Palestinians as a whole. It is painful for solidarity activists elsewhere in the world to watch the news on television and read the news. Yet, nothing tangible has happened by way of bold interventions by the EU, its member nations, the USA, and countries that can make a difference. Political will is lacking as well as preserving space for opportunistic alliances.

“She’s a capitalist at heart — she wants businesses to do well,” said Yasmin Nelson, a former senior Harris adviser.¹ This is what we must keep in mind as millions flock to Harris with the false hope of solving our nation’s woes. No matter she is a woman of color, her differences from Trump or Biden, or her long history of opportunism, she does not waiver in her commitment to capitalism and US world supremacy.

Harris may wish to stabilize the middle class, by which she means professional and managerial workers and small business owners, but she does not talk about the working class that depends on wages from capitalists, who may or may not supply them with jobs. She may allude to suffering in Gaza, but she does not forswear Israel or other murderous regimes. She may rely on her immigrant identity, but she says to immigrants “Do not come.’’ She may rely on being a person of color, but she does not have a history of fighting racism. She is a woman and she does support reproductive rights, at least getting back to where we were 51 years ago when Roe v. Wade passed.

Millions of Americans, who are terrified at the specter of fascism were Trump to be re-elected, must realize that fascism is not the whim of a few individual leaders but a stage of capitalism when the ruling class can no longer rule in the old way. If the economy cannot provide enough jobs with living wages or basic needs like housing and health care to most citizens, then unrest occurs. If foreign wars require the young to be drafted or resources deflected to the military, unrest occurs. If police respond to labor actions or workers’ protests with violence and racism, unrest occurs. And if the system cannot respond by mitigating those conditions, that’s when fascism is needed:  an increase of exploitation, nationalism, racism, sexism, and repression to divide and suppress us.

To be sure, the US capitalist class has important internal tactical differences. To be overly simplistic, the Republicans, wedded to Trump, represent an isolationist group of primarily US-centered interests who see the need to divide unhappy workers now by introducing overtly racist and sexist ideas. Overall, liberal Democrats wish to maintain international alliances such as NATO, promote the wellbeing of at least some workers, such as the higher paid home-owning middle class, and promote small measures versus climate change.

Kamala has old and deep ties to the liberal branch of the corporate class. Her sister is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the main Wall Street think tank, and she has long been supported by the Clinton and Obama machines. When the going gets rough, all of these politicians will say and do what they must to protect the profits of capitalists, because thats the underlying necessity of capitalism, not a flexible principle that could ever take second place. Voting may allow us to choose between different tactics of capitalist control – if we live in the few “swing” states where one’s vote counts. But voting can only distract us from directly organizing for what workers need, which has nothing to do with capitalists keeping up their profits.

Kamala’s California Ascent

Always able and ambitious, Kamala got her first big career boost by being in a relationship with the powerful black California politician Wille Brown, then speaker of State Assembly and later Mayor of San Francisco. He got her appointed to well-paid state boards and introduced her to wealthy Democratic establishment figures such as Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein and other backers. They helped her successfully run for San Francisco City Attorney in 2004, State Attorney General in 2011 and the US Senate in 2017.²

Although in her memoir she says “America has a deep and dark history of people using the power of the prosecutor as an instrument of injustice,” she was often exactly the prosecutor she describes. Among her achievements as DA and AG were

·                Opposed an anti- death penalty ruling for California from an appeals court, although claiming to be opposed to the death penalty³

·                Opposed body cams for cops

·                Opposed legislation requiring independent AG investigations of deadly shootings by police

·                Supported reporting arrested undocumented juveniles to ICE

·                Supported an illegal jail informant program in Orange County⁴

·                Refused to reduce Supreme Court ordered overcrowding in California prisons which were at double capacity and expressed fears pf losing prisoners used as fire fighters⁵

·                Made it a crime to be the parent of chronically truant children, which disproportionately affected poor non-white parents

·                Fought to uphold wrongful convictions secured through misconduct on technicalities like late filing⁴

Domestic Policies

Like Biden, Harris has supported some reforms of economic and social policies and has also shown her willingness to change her positions when it was opportune to do so. She does support an increase in the corporate tax rate, although only to 28% (she once had said 35%), universal pre-kindergarten and affordable child care. However, although in 2017 she supported Medicare for All, by her 2019 presidential run she was for keeping private insurance and supporting privatized Medicare Advantage Plans.⁶ In the primary debates in 2019, she memorably confronted Biden with her own busing as a child to integrate schools. But she later said busing was just one tool that should be decided on a district by district basis.⁴

As a presidential primary candidate in 2020, Harris called for a $1 trillion increase in climate spending over 10 years. However, her actual policies have been much more limited. She created an environmental justice unit as DA, which filed a few lawsuits against small companies and as AG sued Volkswagen and Conoco Phillips for environmental violations. As Senator in 2020 she called for a fracking ban and supported the Green New Deal. However, when tapped by Biden she reversed this position and she still opposes a ban. She came to support Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. which may help reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to a maximum of 42 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.⁷  None of this comes close, however, to actually stopping or reversing climate change, which an economy dependent on competitive quarterly profits can never do.

Kamala on the World Stage

The Vice President’s big overseas assignment was to do something about the root causes of immigration across the southern border. In the white paper her office published, Root Causes Strategy, she made the extraordinary statement: ”For decades, our nation has engaged in Central America. Often well intentioned…”⁸ She then went on to propose an Anticorruption Task Force for Guatemala which will include U.S. prosecutors and law enforcement experts.

Harris chose to ignore that Guatemala’s long downhill slide began in 1954 when the US overthrew elected President Arbenz in order to protect the fortunes of the United Fruit Company. It has remained a nation with an over 50% poverty rate. In recent times, the importation of subsidized corn, the staple of the diet, has depressed local production and raised prices. The biofuels industry also has made it profitable for local businesses to export corn and for large landowners to lease to large companies rather than rent to subsistence farmers or ranch cattle. But Harris ignores it all and simply says to desperate people considering emigration, “Do not come.”⁹

Although she has uttered a few words of sympathy for Gazan suffering and urged a ceasefire, she is not in any way threatening to decrease support for Israel.¹⁰ In fact, as we have written about on this blog,  Israel is of overwhelming importance to the US as its only well-armed reliable Mid-East ally in area still vital for fossil fuel resources and world trade. Many politicians would prefer that Israel mitigate its brutal tactics towards Palestinians so as not to cause worldwide condemnation and threaten carefully crafted alliances between Israel and Arab countries via the Abraham accords. But there is no possibility of an actual split between the US and Israel.

Nor will there be a rift with Ukraine under Harris, with which the US has been closely allied since 2014 when it engineered a pro-Western coup in order to lessen the influence of Russia. Nor will there be any deflection from the current US emphasis on trying to limit the growing power of China, such as the newly announced expanded military presence in Japan.

Lessons to be Learned

It is no surprise that a lot of billionaires are backing Harris, including George Soros, higher ups in Blackstone, former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin who hailed from Goldman Sachs, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Reid Hoffman of Linkedin, Sheryl Dandberg, and many others.¹¹  Unfortunately, a lot of workers are too. Many are excited just because she’s not Biden or Trump, that she’s attractive and energetic, that she is not a white man. But that is precisely the danger. She represents the interests of finance capital, of US supremacy, and she knows how to appeal to a broad audience. She may even keep a few of the promises she makes to support workers or children or the environment, if they are affordable, but she is willing to discard any platform if it becomes too costly, in dollars or influence.

There is no chance that the US capitalist system, supported by a massive military and hundreds of thousands of police, will ever prioritize the needs of the working class. There is no possibility that the electoral system would ever allow an opponent of capitalism to be elected, let alone have media exposure. There are a few politicians, like Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders, who wish that capitalism was a little more generous to workers, but they are not anti-capitalism. The tragedy of elections for us is that so much popular energy is devoted to them as opposed to organizing mass struggles by workers, students and soldiers that might win reforms and be used to expose capitalism’s true workings.

Ever since the end of the civil rights struggles, identity politics has been used to quiet anti-racist demands. Black and Latin politicians were promoted for many major positions since the 1960s, and in recent years the mayor of almost every major city has been black. It was extraordinary that Obama became president, but that only ushered in a continuation of the Afghan war, mass deportations, and no action against racist police killings. In fact, for several years mass protests dramatically abated as people waited for government action. We have not had a woman head of state, but around the world women have carried on killing, like the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina, who has killed hundred and jailed thousands of students protesting for jobs.

Kamala Harris poses a great danger to the world’s workers, as great as any other capitalist politician. Let us be wary. Let us keep fighting back. Don’t vote. Organize.

On 5 July 2024  the leading medical journal The Lancet published a Letter estimating  186,000 Gazan deaths from violence and imposed deprivation in the ongoing Gaza Massacre and Gaza Genocide in the Gaza Concentration Camp. This news was widely reported by Alternative media but remains overwhelmingly ignored by the Western Mainstream. By way of proof of Orwellian Western lying a  Letter detailing this carnage has been sent to Australian MPs. The Silence is Deafening.

In George Orwell’s famous novel “1984” Big Brother asserted that “slavery is freedom”, “war is peace”, “ignorance is strength” and “2 plus 2 does not equal 4”. These flagrant untruths have in effect now been adopted by Gaza Genocide-ignoring  Western Mainstream journalist, editor, politician, academic and commentariat presstitutes who blindly dance to the tune of Zionist-subverted, Zionist-perverted, serial war criminal, egregiously mendacious, pro-Apartheid Israel and hence pro-Apartheid America.

However the mendacious Mainstream is not satisfied  with this general semantic reinvention and  normalizing of slavery, war, ignorance and arithmetic falsehood.  In Australia the Labor Government, the Coalition Opposition and the Mainstream media are overwhelmingly united in demands for  prohibiting access to Social Media by under-16 year old children. The morally degenerate, pro-Apartheid Israel and hence pro-Apartheid Australian Labor Government  dishonestly  implies  that those supporting Palestinian human rights (notably anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish activists, including the wonderful on-campus university  student protesters currently being persecuted by pro-Apartheid Israel university bosses) are “anti-semitic” and “damaging social cohesion” in “multicultural Australia”.

In relation to Palestine, the 57-years of  brutal military occupation, human rights  denial and  slavery are not freedom, the century of Zionist-imposed war, expulsion and genocide is not peace, ignorance of genocidal atrocities is not strength, and rejection of  primary school arithmetic is simply lunacy and egregious falsehood.

Orwellian Australia? Yes: Anti-racist Jews and ethnically Semitic Arabs and Palestinians protesting Apartheid Israeli crimes are falsely defamed as asserted “anti-semites”.  Zionists have  formally complained to the Australian Human Rights Commission  over unexceptional reportage by famed pro-human rights Australian journalist Mary Kostakidis.  Many wonderful, truth-telling Australian journalists and writers  have been threatened or “let go” for courageous reportage, the “honor roll” of those that I have publicly defended including Mike Carlton, Scott McIntyre, Dr Sandra Nasr, Yassmin Abdel-Magied, Alan Seymour, Michelle Guthrie, Essam Al Ghalib, Emma Alberici, Stan Grant, Antoinette Lattouf and World hero and famed journalist  Julian Assange (finally released from 12 years of imprisonment  in London for reporting US war crimes after the spineless and US lackey but voter-conscious Australian Labor Government eventually concluded that “enough is enough”). The only Australian imprisoned over Australian war crimes in Afghanistan  is the whistle-blower who reported them. And so on …

Mainstream lying is de rigeur for look-the-other-way White Australia. Lying by omission is far, far worse than repugnant lying by commission because the latter can at least admit public refutation and public debate (subject to media gate-keepers, of course). For the same reason genocide ignoring  is far, far worse than repugnant genocide denial. Anti-racist Jewish South African  Australian genocide scholar, Professor Colin Tatz , wrote of the Australian Aboriginal Genocide 3 decades ago but reporting this atrocity (2 million Indigenous deaths from violence, dispossession, deprivation and introduced disease)  was dismissed by Australian Coalition PM John Howard as the “black arm band view of history”. The 1788 onwards  Aboriginal Genocide  was qualitatively the worst genocide and ethnocide in human history (of 350-700 unique Indigenous languages and dialects pre-1788 only 120 survive today with all but about 25 endangered). The 2-century British-imposed Indian Holocaust (1,800 million deaths from violence and violently imposed deprivation) was quantitatively the worst holocaust in human history. Yet Mainstream Australia ignores and most Australians are unaware of the WW2 Bengali Holocaust (WW2 Indian  Holocaust, WW2 Bengal Famine; 6-7 million Indians deliberately starved to death in Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha for strategic reasons by the British with food-denying Australian complicity; see my huge book “Jane Austen and the Black Hole of British History. Colonial rapacity, holocaust denial and the crisis in global sustainability”).

I am a scientist and in science there is zero tolerance for lying. By way of proof (if further proof were needed) of Orwellian Australian Mainstream lying for genocidally racist Apartheid Israel I have composed the following Open Letter to Australian MPs. It has been sent to nearly all Federal Australian MPs and to nearly all Victorian State MPs (so far the Silence is Deafening):

Dear Senator (or Honorable Member as appropriate),

The Lancet: 186,000 Gaza deaths – Open Letter to Australian MPs re Gaza Genocide complicity

Whether a child is killed by bashing, bullets and bombs or is killed by deliberately-imposed deprivation, the death is just as final and the perpetrators are just as culpable.

Global avoidable deaths from deprivation have totalled 1,500 million since 1950 and in 2020 global avoidable deaths from deprivation totalled 7.4 million with 70% being of under-5 year old infants as set out in my huge book “Body Count. Global avoidable mortality since 1950”.

Of course those like the Mainstream Australian journalist, editor, politician, academic and commentariat  genocide-ignorers  remorselessly denying the reality of  massive avoidable deaths from war-, occupation- and hegemony-imposed deprivation are simply lying and grossly violating the core messages from the WW2 Jewish Holocaust and indeed from all holocaust and genocide atrocities, to whit “zero tolerance for lying”, “zero tolerance for racism”, “bear witness” and “never again  to anyone”. Indeed they are violating the core ethos of Humanity, namely Kindness and Truth.

Of course genocide ignoring and holocaust-ignoring is far, far worse than repugnant genocide denial and holocaust denial because the latter at least permit public refutation and public debate (subject to media gate-keepers, of course).

The leading medical journal The Lancet has estimated 186,000 killed so far in the ongoing   Gaza Genocide, with this including (a) 37,000 killed violently (ignoring the circa 8,000 dead buried under rubble) and (b) 149,000 dying avoidably from imposed deprivation. Euro-Med Human  Rights Monitor has estimated that by Day 250 of the Gaza Massacre (7 October 2023 – 12 June 2024 or about 8 months and including 8,000 killed in the rubble) 45,000 Gazans had been killed,  including 16,000 children (35.6%), 10,000 women (22.2%), and 19,000 men (42.2%), 500 health professionals, and 152 courageous, truth-telling journalists.

Children killed in Gaza include (a) 0.356 x 37,000 = 13,172 (children killed violently) + (b) 0.356 x 8,000 = 2,848 (children killed under the rubble) + (c) 0.7 x 149,000 =104,300 (under-5 deaths from deprivation) + (d ) 0.356 x (149,000 – 104,300) = 15,913 (5 years and older child avoidable deaths) = 136,233 or about 136,000 children in total.

Children  killed in Gaza from imposed deprivation = 104,300 (under-5 deaths from deprivation) + 15,913 (5 years and older avoidable deaths) = 120,213. Accordingly adults killed from deprivation = 149,000 – 120,213 = 28,787 of which one can estimate 0.222 x 28,787= 6,391 (women killed from deprivation) ) and  0.422 x 28,787 = 12,148 (men killed from deprivation).

Accordingly women killed = 6,391 (non-violently) + 10,000 (violently) = 16,391, and men killed = 12,148 (from deprivation) + 19,000 (violently) = 31,148.

Thus of 186,000 Gazans estimated in The Lancet to have been killed by violence and imposed deprivation over 136,000 have been children, 16,000 women and 31,000 men.

The 136,000 children killed by Jewish Israelis in Gaza is 136,000  x 100/ 1,500,000 = 9.1% of the 1,500,000 children killed by Nazi Germans in WW2.

The rate of killing of children by Jewish Israelis in Gaza over 8 months  = 136,000 children / 8 months = 17,000 children killed per month, whereas the rate of Nazi German killing of Jewish children in WW2 (74 months) = 1,500,000 children/74 months = 20,270 children killed per month).

Indeed “People killed per day per million of relevant prisoner population” was 22.9 (Japanese killing of Australian prisoners of war in WW2 by violence and deprivation) versus for Jewish Israeli violent killing of Palestinians in the Gaza Concentration Camp 86.2 (total population), 132.3 (men), 66.7 (children), and 76.3 (women) [1].

On a per capita basis Apartheid Israel in Gaza leads the world for the rate of killing  of children and of journalists.

In 2021 I published an analysis of 52 Zionist- and Apartheid Israeli-Nazi Germany comparisons [2]. The utterly unforgivable Jewish Israeli mass murder of 136,000 children in Gaza  makes a 53rd shocking comparison.

In 1944 in response to the killing of 30 German soldiers in an Italian Partisan ambush, Nazi mass murderer Adolph Hitler ordered an Occupied/Occupier Reprisals Death Ratio of 10 and this was immediately effected with the execution of 335 Italian men and boys in the Ardeatine Massacre near Rome. About 1,200 Israelis were killed in the 7 October 2023 Palestinian Breakout from the Gaza Concentration Camp (with many likely killed by high explosive shells and missiles in the IDF response). Accordingly the  Occupied/Occupier Reprisals Death Ratio was greater than 186,000/1,200 = 155, 15.5 times greater than the Reprisals Death Ratio of 10 ordered by Hitler. Nazi is as Nazi does. Terrorist is as terrorist does.

Of course the killing continues with the war criminal US Joe Biden/ Kamala Harris Administration funding and supplying the bullets, shells and bombs. The US has supplied 69% of weapons imported by Apartheid Israel and an evidently unrepentant Germany has supplied 30%. Australia has a substantial 2-way arms trade with Apartheid Israel.

However there is a further horrible dimension to this appalling Zionist child abuse. Thus it has been expertly determined that 50% of Israeli children suffer physical, psychological or sexual abuse, with 18% suffering sexual abuse. Pro-Apartheid Israel and hence pro-Apartheid Australia is second only to the similarly pro-Apartheid US as a supporter of Apartheid Israel. 25% of Australian children and 18% of US children suffer child sexual abuse [3].

Children were about 47% of the pre-7 October 2023  Gaza population of 2.3 million (now about 2.1 million) and all must be horribly traumatized by the bombing, starvation, privation, and deaths from violence and deprivation totalling 8.1% of the pre-Gaza Massacre population. With an estimated 100,000 injured, the over 286,000  killed and injured so far is 12.4% of the pre-Gaza Massacre population. This is genocide as defined by Article 2 of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (“acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”).  Noting that the Australian Labor Government is complicit in the Gaza Genocide in 20 ways [4], Article 3 of the Genocide Convention states: “The following acts shall be punishable… (e) Complicity in genocide”.

Of course the killing must stop immediately and permanently. The civilized World must insist on the immediate end to the highly abusive, 57-year Occupation to permit entry of life-preserving water, food, shelter, sanitation , medicine and medical care that has been substantially denied by the Jewish Israeli IDF in gross violation of Articles 55 and 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War) that demand that an Occupier must provide the conquered Subjects with life-sustaining  food and medical requisites “to the fullest extent of the means available to it”. The Occupation must end immediately to also permit entry of forensic teams to determine exactly how many have died and how they were killed.

I am an anti-racist Jewish Australian with a sole allegiance to Australia and coming from a very famous Ashkenazi Jewish Hungarian family (ask any mathematician or surgeon). Zionism is a genocidally racist ideology  and Zionist settler-colonialism is Nazism without  gas chambers or mass executions of tens of thousands at a time (as at Babi Yar near Kiev), but with Apartheid Israel having 90 nuclear weapons (according to Nobel Prize-winning and Melbourne-founded ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) and one of the world’s largest high technology militaries.

Zionism has horribly trashed Jews, Judaism and the wonderful 3,000-year Jewish humanitarian tradition as exampled by the Ten Commandments, Jesus’ “love thy neighbour as thyself”), Baruch Spinoza (a Father of the Enlightenment who espoused observation and reason), and wonderful present era humanitarian Jewish scholars  from Hannah Arendt to Howard Zinn.

There are 2 kinds of people in the World, those opposing the mass murder of children and the utterly unforgivable others. The Zionist- and US-beholden Australian Labor Government has betrayed Australia and Humanity by falsely defaming anti-racist Jews such as myself critical of Apartheid Israel (anti-Jewish anti-Semitism), anti-racist Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims critical of Zionist crimes  (anti-Arab anti-Semitism) and a host of other decent, anti-racist Australians with a sole allegiance to Australia.  Instead of taking  advice from outstanding anti-racist  Jewish Australians (e.g. Sir Isaac Isaacs, and Professors Peter Singer, Dennis Altman, and Eva Cox ), Zionist-subverted  and craven US lackey Australia blindly follows the line of traitorous racist Zionists and Apartheid Israel that have an appalling record of damaging, subverting and perverting Australians, Australian institutions and Australia.

I have just published a huge book entitled “Free Palestine. End Apartheid Israel, Human Rights Denial, Gaza Massacre, Child Killing, Occupation and Palestinian Genocide”. Variously as  a Labor supporter (I door knocked for US-deposed Gough Whitlam), ALP member, unionist and branch union secretary I voted Labor for 40 years until like so many others was compelled to change to voting Greens 1 and Labor 2 for the last 15 years over the  continuing failure of Labor to properly address Australia’s huge Domestic plus Exported Greenhouse  Gas (GHG) pollution. However under a Labor Government Australia is second only to the US as a fervent supporter of Apartheid Israel and hence of the vile crime of Apartheid. Those supporting Apartheid  are  utterly unfit for decent human company, public life and public office.  It is impossible for decent, anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish Australians to vote for Labor or for the even worse Coalition.

The Australian Labor Government is unforgivably complicit in the Gaza Genocide in 20 ways [4] and lies in the interests of Australia-violating  Apartheid Israel in 15 ways [5]. Because Labor is actually in government and must be punished for its horrific Gaza Genocide complicity and for making Australia complicit in this unforgivable crime, decent, informed Australians will put Labor last in Australia’s preferential voting system. Those like Labor, the Coalition, most Independents and Mainstream media all supporting Apartheid Israel and hence the evil crime of Apartheid are unfit for public life in a one-person-one-vote and Domestic human rights-respecting country like Australia. Indeed out of 227 Federal MPs only 19 have supported Palestinian human rights and an immediate  and permanent end to the killing (15 Greens plus ex-Green Senator Lidia Thorpe, Dr Helen Haines, Andrew Wilkie, and ex-Labor Senator Fatima Payman) that in the unequivocal judgement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) must be effected by an immediate end to the 57 year illegal Occupation by Apartheid Israel.

Israel yesterday evening carried out a provocative strike inside a heavily built-up area of the Lebanese capital of Beirut targeting Mushin Shukr, a top military commander of the Iranian-aligned Hezbollah militia. While the Israeli regime claims its “targeted” strike killed Shukr, sources close to Hezbollah have told the media that he survived.

In separate late news, Israel carried out the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in an airstrike in Tehran this morning. The killing not only sabotages any prospect of a ceasefire deal in Gaza but makes clear that the Zionist regime, backed by Washington, is determined to transform its genocidal war into a region-wide conflict.

To justify its attack in Beirut, Israel seized on the killing of 12 children from the Druze community in a missile strike on Saturday in the occupied Golan Heights. For all of Israel’s bellicose, but unsubstantiated denunciations of Hezbollah, the circumstances remain unclear. Hezbollah has emphatically denied responsibility for Saturday’s missile strike.

The Israeli strike demolished at least five stories of an apartment block in a heavily populated suburb of southern Beirut. According to the Lebanese state-run newsagency NAA, three missiles fired from a drone struck the building, covering the surrounding streets in rubble and debris.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that three people have been killed and 74 wounded in the strike. With the search for victims continuing, it said that the casualties to date included a woman and two children, a girl and a boy. It is unclear whether any of the surrounding buildings, which included the Bahman Hospital, were damaged.

The Israeli decision to attempt the assassination of a top Hezbollah commander is calculated to set off a wider conflict in Lebanon, making a mockery of Israeli claims that it is not seeking war with Hezbollah. Shukr is a senior adviser to Hezbollah leader chief Hassan Nasrallah and a member of Hezbollah’s top military council.

The extreme right wing of the fascistic Israeli regime has been braying for all-out war with Hezbollah for months. In late May, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the military to invade and seize control of southern Lebanon to create a buffer zone to prevent Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel.

In response, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir declared that it was not enough to create a buffer zone, demanding instead that the Israeli military should storm Lebanon and “destroy Hezbollah in its entirety.” The following month Ben-Gvir visited northern Israel, where Hezbollah rockets had triggered fires and declared: “They’re burning [us] here. All Hezbollah strongholds should be burned, they should be destroyed. War!”

US imperialism gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the green light for war against Hezbollah during his visit to Washington last week where he addressed a joint session of Congress in bellicose language and received bipartisan backing. He cut short his trip following Saturday’s attack on the Golan Heights to return to Israel, where he met with military and intelligence chiefs and vowed that Hezbollah would “pay a heavy price for it, a price it has not paid before.”

On Sunday, the Israeli warplanes bombed weapons depots and infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, in Shabriha and Burj al-Shemali near the southern city of Tyre, and the villages of Kfar Kila, Rab el-Thalathine, Khiam and Tayr Harfa.

On Monday night, the Israeli military carried out another series of strikes in southern Lebanon and southern Syria. The attacks in southern Lebanon included drone, artillery and airstrikes on some 10 sites of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in seven different areas.

While these strikes represented a significant escalation of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel that has been underway since October 7, yesterday evening’s attack in Beirut was calculated to provoke Hezbollah’s retaliation and further enflame tensions throughout the Middle East.

The strike has provoked a wave of protests. Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib denounced the strike on Beirut and said that he would file a complaint with the United Nations. The Iranian Embassy in Lebanon condemned the Israeli strike on Beirut, calling it “cowardly and sinful Israeli aggression.” In April, Israel carried out a provocative strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, killing two senior generals of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp and at least five other people, threatening to trigger a region-wide war with Iran.

CNN reported that the US had been informed of the Beirut strike in advance. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant by phone on Monday. While the official read-out paid lip service to the need for a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Hezbollah, Austin gave his “unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and right of self-defense,” effectively giving Israel carte blanche for the attack.

The decision to target Mushin Shukr was not accidental. The US State Department put a $5 million bounty on his head after branding him a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in 2019. It claimed that he “played a central role in the October 23, 1983 bombing of the US Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut.” Four years earlier the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Shukr and two other Hezbollah leaders.

In the wake of yesterday’s strike, US Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate, rapidly and emphatically declared her support for Israel, saying: “I unequivocally support Israel’s right to remain secure and to defend the security of Israel.” To emphasise the point, she added that, in particular, “it has the right to defend itself against the terrorist organisation, which is exactly what Hezbollah is.”

In the name of Israel’s so-called right to self-defense, US imperialism and its allies have backed Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza diplomatically, financially and militarily to the hilt and justified its atrocities. While Israel declares that Hezbollah has “crossed all the red lines” in its alleged killing of children in the Golan Heights, the Israeli military slaughters Palestinian children every day in Gaza. The official death toll of men, women and children in Gaza is over 40,000 since October 7, while an estimate in the highly respected Lancet medical journal puts that figure far higher at 186,000.

Now Washington is backing an Israeli war that threatens to plunge the Middle East into a far more devastating conflict that would lay waste to the region. Despite its nominal calls for a diplomatic solution, US imperialism, like the Zionist regime, regards the conflict in Gaza as one element of a far broader war against Iranian-aligned groups throughout the region and against Iran itself, which it regards as the chief obstacle to securing its domination in the energy-rich Middle East.
