Hours Left: Save Rio; Save the Planet

Over a million people have called on world leaders to end fossil fuel subsidies at the Rio Earth Summit — a no-brainer policy that could take one trillion tax dollars from Big Oil and reinvest it in green energy. But they’ve failed to deliver — even with the backing of the EU, the US and most G20 countries! The talks end in hours. Now is our chance to save them and the planet’s future.

Brazil’s Dilma is hosting the summit and has the power to reopen discussions and demand a timeline for ending polluter payouts, but she is considering walking away with the weak language presented by a team of bureaucrats. We can stop her in her tracks.

Dilma has hours to emerge as a global climate hero. Sign this urgent petition now and forward to everyone — at 500,000 signers, Avaaz will deliver it straight to Dilma’s hands and run an urgent, hard-hitting ad in the Financial Times.

To Save Life of Mahmoud Al- Sarsak

Only recently, Badayl Alternatives sent out an urgent call to action about the life of a 25 year old Palestinian footballer Mahmoud Al-Sark. He has been on hunger strike for 84 days to protest his imprisonment without any reasonable charge.

If successful, this campaign can redefine how the world begins to address the question of Israel’s irregularities in applying international human rights law when it comes to administrative detention, imprisonment without trial, arbitrary detention.

Human rights groups are worried that Al Sarsak is just clinging to life. “We are afraid that if there is an emergency, which is possible after such a long hunger strike, especially involving heart failure, the doctors won’t be able to provide adequate care,” said Anat Litvin from the Israeli organisation Physicians for Human Rights.

Stopping the Naval Base Construction in Jeju Island and Keeping East- Asian Peace

The South Korean government and the Navy is constructing a naval base at Gangjeong village in The Jeju island, which was designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and whose landscape is well-known as one of the most beautiful ones in the world. For the past several years, the grassroots people’s movement and the hundreds of civil society organizations have been fighting against such a destructive and anti-environmental effort. Against this, the National Association of Professors for Democracy in Korea (NAPD) is collecting solidarity signatures from citizens around the world.

Save the Rhino!

The rhino is being hunted into extinction and could disappear forever unless we act now. Shocking new statistics show 440 rhinos were brutally killed last year in South Africa alone — a massive increase on five years ago when just 13 had their horns hacked off. European nations could lead the world to a new plan to save these amazing creatures but they need to hear from us first!

Fueling this devastation is a huge spike in demand for rhino horns, used for bogus cancer cures, hangover remedies and good luck charms in China and Vietnam. Protests from South Africa have so far been ignored by the authorities, but Europe has the power to change this by calling for a ban on all rhino trade — from anywhere, to anywhere — when countries meet at the next crucial international wildlife trade summit in July.

The situation is so dire that the threat has even spread into British zoos who are on red-alert for rhino killing gangs! Let’s raise a giant outcry and urge Europe to push for new protections to save rhinos from extinction. When we reach 100,000 signers, our call will be delivered in Brussels, the decision-making heart of Europe, with a crash of cardboard rhinos. Every 50,000 signatures will add a rhino to the crash — bringing the size of our movement right to the door of EU delegates as they decide their position. RIP Amina

Days ago, 16 year-old Amina Filali, raped, beaten and forced to wed her rapist, killed herself — the only way she saw to escape the trap set for her by her rapist and the law. If we act now, we can stop this unspeakable tragedy from happening to anyone else.

Article 475 in Morocco’s penal code allows a rapist to avoid prosecution and a long prison sentence by marrying his victim if she is a minor. Since 2006, the government has promised to strike this down and pass legislation prohibiting violence against women, but it hasn’t happened.

Hundreds of Moroccan protestors are in the streets demanding real reform, turning up the heat on the Prime Minister and heads of other ministries, who write and sponsor bills and the international media has picked up the story. If we ramp up pressure, we can see real progress now. Sign the petition for a comprehensive law to stop violence against women, including the repeal of Article 475. When we reach 250,000 signatures, we’ll work with local women’s groups to deliver our call to decision-makers.

Save Our Oceans 48 Hours

In 48 hours, Australia could save one million square kms of ocean forever — setting up the largest marine reserve in the world and preserving thousands of delicate species. But they will need a global outcry to beat out commercial fishing and mining companies hoping to destroy the plan.

The Australian government is holding a public consultation, hoping it will give them a mandate to take a big step towards a sustainable future for our oceans and our planet. But the reserve will cost money and without massive support right now, the short term financial interests of industry could beat out our hopes for a safe future for our seas.

We only have 48 hours until the consultation closes — send a submission to the consultation now, then send this page to everyone!

Yemen: Stand with the Protesters

By signing a petition prepared by avaaz.org, JUST joined the rest of the world to urgently call on the US to side with the people of Yemen and not President Saleh’s dictatorial regime.

Thousands of non-violent demonstrators have braved bullets and tear gas to press for the resignation of President Saleh who has been in the office since 1978.  President Saleh has promised to step down by the end of the year. But he has broken such promises before and his actions belie his words. He has imposed a state of emergency, suspended the constitution and deployed tanks to the streets of the capital.  If Saleh’s key allies – the US and Saudi Arabia urge him to resign, he may give up his attempt to cling on to power.

World to Dilma: Save the Amazon

The Amazon is in serious danger: Brazil is on the verge of gutting its forest protection laws — unless we act now, vast tracts of our planet’s lungs could be opened up to clear-cutting devastation.

This threat to the Amazon has sparked widespread anger and protests across the country and tensions are rising. In an effort to stifle criticism, armed thugs, allegedly hired by loggers, have murdered environmental advocates. But the movement is fighting back — in three days, brave indigenous people are leading massive marches across Brazil to demand action and inside sources say President Dilma is considering vetoing the changes.
