Save Our Oceans 48 Hours

In 48 hours, Australia could save one million square kms of ocean forever — setting up the largest marine reserve in the world and preserving thousands of delicate species. But they will need a global outcry to beat out commercial fishing and mining companies hoping to destroy the plan.

The Australian government is holding a public consultation, hoping it will give them a mandate to take a big step towards a sustainable future for our oceans and our planet. But the reserve will cost money and without massive support right now, the short term financial interests of industry could beat out our hopes for a safe future for our seas.

We only have 48 hours until the consultation closes — send a submission to the consultation now, then send this page to everyone!

Thirst For Change- Turning The Tide On Water Poverty

Today, 884 million people will take their lives in their hands each time they take a drink of water. Esther is one of them.

Her Zambian village doesn’t get pumped water every day. When the tap runs dry, her family drink dirty river water. It’s already made them sick. Esther’s thirsting for change and so are we.

Yemen: Stand with the Protesters

By signing a petition prepared by avaaz.org, JUST joined the rest of the world to urgently call on the US to side with the people of Yemen and not President Saleh’s dictatorial regime.

Thousands of non-violent demonstrators have braved bullets and tear gas to press for the resignation of President Saleh who has been in the office since 1978.  President Saleh has promised to step down by the end of the year. But he has broken such promises before and his actions belie his words. He has imposed a state of emergency, suspended the constitution and deployed tanks to the streets of the capital.  If Saleh’s key allies – the US and Saudi Arabia urge him to resign, he may give up his attempt to cling on to power.

World to Dilma: Save the Amazon

The Amazon is in serious danger: Brazil is on the verge of gutting its forest protection laws — unless we act now, vast tracts of our planet’s lungs could be opened up to clear-cutting devastation.

This threat to the Amazon has sparked widespread anger and protests across the country and tensions are rising. In an effort to stifle criticism, armed thugs, allegedly hired by loggers, have murdered environmental advocates. But the movement is fighting back — in three days, brave indigenous people are leading massive marches across Brazil to demand action and inside sources say President Dilma is considering vetoing the changes.

Western Union: Stop the crippling fees!

As the new year starts, millions of hard-working men and women gather the money they have saved throughout the year, go to a local Western Union office and wire it to their relatives throughout the developing world. But up to 20% of these savings are taken in transfer fees, allowing companies to make billions of dollars in profit on the backs of the world’s neediest.

Despite the World Bank calling for a maximum of 5% transaction fees, Western Union has never faced a public outcry to challenge its shameless profiteering.

JUST supported the petition prepared by Avaaz.org to challenge Western Union predatory fees.

University of Johannesburg and Ben-Gurion University Campaign

JUST has signed the petition initiated by University of Johannesburg (UJ) staffs and students to call on their university to end its relationship with Israel’s Ben-Gurion University (BGU).

On 29th September 2010, UJ’s senate decided not to continue its relationship with BGU and the decision was captured in a document called the Senate Resolution.

The UJ Petition has been hailed by Palestinian civil society as a “breakthrough” and “historic moment” in the movement to end Israeli oppression.

In early February 2011 a UJ delegation went to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The UJ delegation returned with a Scenario Document that has six scnarios/outcomes for UJ’s Senate to consider at its next meeting on 23 March 2011. Some of the scenarios did not support the earlier UJ Senate Resolution.

This petition is an attemp to salvage the UJ-BGU relationship.

Turkey : Help Free Iman Al-Obeidi

Iman al-Obeidi burst into a Tripoli hotel and appeal to foreign journalists for help, showing bruises and claiming she had been raped and beaten by 15 of Qaddafi’s men. She was immediately dragged away by plain-clothed security forces who struck journalists that were trying to help her.

By signing a petition prepared by avaaz.org, JUST respectfully call on to President Erdoğan and the government of Turkey to use Turkey’s diplomatic means to assist in securing the release of Iman al-Obeidi, and encouraging the full investigation of her rape and abuse.

The Turkish government has played a crucial role in negotiating the release of regime hostages during the Libya conflict. Al-Obeidi’s cry for justice and an end to the violence represents that of thousands of innocent Libyans who have suffered cruelly under Qaddafi’s regime.

Stop Somalia’s Tragedy

Right now, more than 2000 people are dying every day in Somalia, in a famine that threatens to starve eleven million people to death. Drought has brought this region to its knees, but the food crisis is really fueled by a complete breakdown in governance and international diplomacy, and we can put an end to it. We cannot let the politics of the war on terror claim any more innocent lives. The famine-hit area is governed by Al-Shabaab, an Islamist regime that is linked to terrorist groups.

It’s time for the international community and Al-Shabaab to come to an agreement to immediately get food to the suffering Somali people. The UN Security Council is meeting in a few days — let’s demand that they take immediate action to support key Arab nations in an effort to open talks with Al-Shabaab on cooperating to end the famine and seize this chance for a long-term political solution.

Click here to sign the petition.
