JUST signed the petition prepared by salsa.democracyinaction.org  to  ask TIAA-CREF, one of the largest financial services in the United States to refrain from investing in any company that contributes to violations of human rights or international law by:

• Directly profiting from, or contributing to, the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
• Providing products or services that contribute to the construction and maintenance of Israeli settlements and/or the Separation Wall, both of which are illegal under international law.
• Providing products or services that contribute to or enable violent acts that target civilians. divest from companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem .

Just stood by  with the Student Senates of UC Berkeley and UC San Diego in their vote to divest

Like Palestinian visiting student Ibrahim Shikaki who stood side by side with Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein in Berkeley, we stand with you. Like countless student organizations representing every race and ethnicity who turned out to support divestment, we stand with you. Like the dozens of professors, Nobel prize winners, rabbis who together said, “Yes, it is time to divest,” we stand with you. Inspired by your courage and your leadership, we stand as grandmothers and grandsons, Muslims and Jews, Christians and atheists, fathers and daughters, in quiet solidarity and in fervent hope. We stand with you, we are here for you, and we believe in you. Though we cannot be in the room with you when you vote, we are with you.

This campaign is part of a larger effort to bring peace and justice to Burma and to end the vicious tyranny that has ruled the country for years. The more people that sign the petition, the more powerful our message becomes.

JUST signed the petition prepared by Avaaz.org for the release of Omar Khadr, a child who has been held in Guantanamo Bay for eight years. Usually  children that are forced into conflicts around the world are treated in rehabilitation programmes.

The US is launching a new military tribunal in Guantanamo Bay and the first person to be put on trial will be a Canadian, Omar Khadr  who was only 15 years old when he was captured in Afghanistan.  Senior officials at the White House, Justice Department and the Pentagon want President Obama to offer a plea bargain and release him immediately but powerful military forces want a rapid show trial.

JUST signed the petition against  Tanzania and Zambia’s request to the UN  for special exemptions from the worldwide ban on the trade in ivory.

Years ago, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) passed a worldwide ban on ivory trading. Poaching fell, and ivory prices slumped. But poor enforcement coupled with ‘experimental one-off sales’, like the one Tanzania and Zambia are seeking, drove poaching up and turned illegal trade into a lucrative business — poachers can launder their illegal ivory with the legal stockpiles. Even with the existing worldwide ban each year over 30,000 elephants are gunned down and their tusks hacked off by poachers with axes and chainsaws. If Tanzania and Zambia are successful in exploiting the loophole, this awful trade could get much worse.

Israel has used lethal force on the aid headed for Gaza to defend their outrageous and lethal policy, Israel’s blockade of Gaza. This petition will be delivered to the UN and world leaders in order to launch a full investigation of the flotilla raid and to lift the blockade in Gaza.

JUST endorsed the Civil Rights for Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon petition to the Cabinet and Parliament of Lebanon.  This petition was created by the Board pf Directors of Sabra Shatila Foundation in response to the lack of civil rights given to the Pelestinians refugees in Lebanon.
