Statement of the WPF Presidency on the Iran Agreement

16 July 2015

The Presidency of WPFDC welcomes the agreement of July 14, 2015, reached by the P5+1 group (the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and the Islamic Republic of Iran on peaceful nuclear activities and the lifting of sanctions.

At a time where too often martial rhetoric prevails and military actions overrule peaceful dialogue and solutions, the agreement demonstrates that mutual understanding is the key to a more peaceful world. WPFDC hopes that the Iranian example of waiving nuclear armament will be followed by others and lead to a global nuclear disarmament. At a minimum, we urge that the systematic inspection of nuclear facilities should be extended from Iran to all countries either possessing or aspiring to possess nuclear weapons in that region.

The WPFDC strongly confirms its position that only dialogue and negotiations on the basis of mutual respect of the sovereign rights of other people might provide the appropriate platform to achieve peaceful resolution of any dispute.

The joint action of the five permanent Security Council members also proves that the United Nations System created after WWII is still viable and should be respected and used by all nations.
